    Bye bye 2011, hello 2012…

Uff, this was fast – 2011 is already over – but what happened this year?

    • Somebody new came into my life – so I have to introduce her to all of you šŸ˜‰ (may take some time)
    • There were some small trips to mention: first of all London to meet with my African Family. It was awesome to meet you guys again and I hope we will meet also in 2012. A long weekend in the Harz and some days with Verena in Stuttgart do not really count but Barcelona should be mentioned. We had a very cool week with sun, food, culture and BEACH :). THX to Verena for organizing everything. Hope 2012 will be better concerning traveling.
    • My two best friends married and I was the best man of Tobi :).
    • World Trip is still in planing but as against last year I plan for 2 people.
    • Japan was hidden by a tsunami and Fukushima became similar famous like Tchernobyl. I’m very happy that all my friends from Japan are safe and I wish the county the very best for the future. I have to come back same day, there are to much days I’m missing this place.
    • Job changed from PMO to PM and will change again in one week to PM + PL. I think there will be some other changes in 2012 too.
    • I bought a mountain bike and started after some years again with badminton. Nevertheless, I have to do more sports in 2012… (New Year’s resolution)

As a conclusion I have to say that 2011 was very different compared with 2010 but most of the problems turn into good. So what should I complain – life is good šŸ™‚

    CU in 2012…

    Lost in the Hanseatic Triangle

    Hey guys,

the report of my death was an exaggeration… but I have to confess that IĀ makeĀ myselfĀ a little bitĀ scarce. Reasons are easy to find:

WORK:Year, some things are going on in my Job concerning my contract, tasks, surrounding… I cannot go into detail but the whole situation was a pain in the ass – similar to Chris (I will visit you at October MAN). At the moment, there is another quiet face where nobody gets new information and to be honest – I don’t give a shit anymore. => now I’m more relaxed and enjoy airplanes šŸ˜‰

    PARTY:Ā
Good way to start a weekend is still going to the Reeperbahn and have some fun with friend/colleges. The core Taskforce team consists of 4 guys including myselfĀ but gets enlarged by other colleges/friend/girlfriends from time to time. So after almost one year in Hamburg :-0 (what I’m one year here, I have to pack my stuff ;)) – I’m still happy here in north Germany even if I have to adept myself every day anew. Some things whichĀ attracted myĀ attention:

    • I’m not running anymore if it is raining…
    • I thought last week – where is the wind?…
    • I’m pretty Ā sure that I’ll buy a mountain bike… So climbing gets replaced by bicycling but still with mountain šŸ˜‰
    • I’m getting used to navy terms like “steuerbord, backbord…”

On the other hand, some things/behavior Ā are still the same:

    • I’m still greeting people with “servus”!!! (south german expression for hello and goodbye in one word)
    • I’m still loving my south german food and hate this fucking sea food.
    • I’m still FC Bayern MĆ¼nchen Fan/Member even if a little part of my heart beats for St. Pauli but only a very little one.
    • I’m keeping a little bit of my southern dialect… Kaddong, BĆ¼rrooo, heb mal,…

But I also remember the amazing times in Africa and get a little bit sentimental when I got this Savanna Cider last week in a bar.Ā I know that I got my first of these in Malawi Ā – the same day I lost my glasses in the sea… Caro ordered me a cider (never heard of this before) and 4 cider later Caro, the danish girls, Graeme and I ended up in one hammock *g*. Next day this sweet little girl tried to grab my thumb – failed and take my pinky :). Same girl gave me my bracelet which I wear since this day… Ahhh I still miss Africa…

    FAMILY:
Last but not least I had some bad news within my family – my grandpa diet at an incredible age of 90 years. He was always one of my role models in life… The funeral was very cool – I think he was pleased. I’m very sure that I’ll miss him but I hope I can absorb as much characteristics of him as possible. In the timeframe we experienced together, he gets more and more interested in natural science, he and his wife started to discover the world, he gave me always guidance in difficult situations and he supported always my lifestyle (t-shirt instead of suite ;), ending my school whatever the cost, moving to japan “not because it is easy but because it is hard”, even my trip to africa…). So thank you for everything I’m trying to make you proud as usual…

    Planten un Blomen

    Hey world,

visited last weekend one of the biggest parks here in Hamburg called Planten un Blomen. Name is not typical German it’s plattdĆ¼tsch (low german) which is more or less similar to Swiss German either a very strong accent of even a proper language spoken here in north germany. OK OK German history lesson is over. Some words about me ;). Life is quite busy/complicated/amazing/annoying/gorgeous… at the moment => can’t complain but there is potential for better times *g*… Yes I’m never completely satisfied for longer times – life is boring if everything is perfect.

Thinking of times I’m completely happy – THX for everybody attending my birthday party… It was a perfect evening even if I drop some bricks but who can be angry with the birthday boy ;). One situation I remember especially:

Friend of mine: Everything all right?
ME: When did you see me smile like this?
Friend of mine: When you came back from Africa!

And like in Africa it’s not only the area, the nice view or the parties, it’s the people making me smile every day. It was amazing that at least 90% party with me until AM 3:00 and 80% until the end some Ƥhh hours later…
To give this a little bit back one more photo. The point of view isn’t that common and it’s made with a very wide angle lense causing this skyscraper effect. In fact I was lying in the middle of this flower bed, some Indian Ā family next to me making a family picture, in one hand holding my cam in the other my flash with a wireless trigger, making a complete fool of myself but I hope it wasn’t for nothing…

So maybe I can get some pictures showing this situation and maybe somebody make one picture during my birthday party??? Also a big birthday party for the Hamburg harbor is in front of my door at the WE. So another reason for a long party night here in St.Pauli!

CU all here in Hamburg šŸ˜‰ and I hope I can sleep know a little bit longer than 2 hours.

    Back to Life

    Hey everybody,

Sorry for the long time off ā€“ had a lot to do concerning work and some letā€™s say turbulent times concerning private life. So now itā€™s a little bit different so I try to use the time for some lines.

THX to Laura, Jade, Melisa and Tam for the great letters/Postcards. Hope to see you soon ā€“ Iā€™m very sure I will see at least the first 2 in a few days. That brings me to the next Point ā€“ my trip to London!
Iā€™m not really sure who is coming, where exactly I will stay, what I want to see or even when my flight is going. If my colleges ask me all this I have to say ā€“ I have totally no Idea but I donā€™t care ā€“ everything will be fine ā€“ people I will meet there are amazing and the city is the best one in whole Europe. So my big masterplan/Outlook tells me: Friday 15.19 leave work by ferry directly to LandungsbrĆ¼cken and start packing! Maybe I will check my flight data and Iā€™ll try to go early to bed. Next Time Iā€™m awake I should be in Heathrow *g*. First one seeing me gets the first big big hug!!! This is more or less all I can offer ;).

Last Point ā€“ Photography! Last weekend I tried to take some pictures of Hamburg at night. So here is a first impression:

    Film Tip for all Globetrotters

I saw this week the travel documentary ā€œA Map for Saturdayā€ after I got a tip in a forum. The movie reveals the world of solo long-term travelling. A guy from New York with a job as a sports journalist decided after 3 years in his job to quit and travel the world. During his trip he interviewed some people and documented the typical backpacker style. I canā€™t tell too much ā€“ but in my opinion a ā€œmust see movieā€ for all people how have wanderlust and love the backpacker styleā€¦

So try your very best to see the movie and let me know your opinion! I had a big big smile on my face while watching the film and I was dreaming about the upcoming big adventure…

    Merry Christmas

    160km/h - 220 I have to time for photos...Merry Christmas to everybody!

After a very cool drift on the Airbus parking space, some interesting stunts on the Autobahn, and finally with 220km/h (137mph) I arrived yesterday evening in Mannheim. Normally the winter in the south is harder but in the moment itā€™s like summer here. Not really much snow, itā€™s more than 0 degree by day and almost no wind. Unfortunately, there is also no sun here so I wasnā€™t outside today.

In order that I didnā€™t get bored ā€“ I remembered all the fantastic Christmas cards from you guys. Normally I donā€™t do such things but I had the feeling I should reactā€¦ I decided to strike back as hard as possible ā€“ I took a pen, some prepared cards andā€¦ I wrote BACK ā€“ BY HAND ā€“ WITHOUT ANY COMPUTER ā€“ NO E-MAIL ā€“ nothing digital – not even by buying anything online. Mission is almost completed ā€“ only the stamps are missing. But I have totally no Idea how much a letter or a card is to Canada, USA, Denmark, Englandā€¦ or even Germany. So I promise Iā€™ll go to the post office next week and Iā€™ll finish the job!!! Ā I hope you can read my terrible hand writing and of course my English and for one person my even worse German.

Hope I will write another Post before New Year ā€“ last 3 weeks I didnā€™t have too much time for such things ā€“ it was very very busy at Airbus and my college had holidays. Ā So more time for even more photography is definitely one of my New Yearā€™s resolutions.

    End-of-Year Review

I’m watching an End-of-Year Review on TV, causing a flood of memories in my mind. Thomas Gottschalk asked the question if it was the best, a normal or even the worst year of everybodyā€™s life. So to answer the question you have to think about the year 2010. What happened in my life?

    • Caro and IĀ finally made it ā€“ Dipl. Ing. AER
    • Of cause my Africa trip with hundreds of unforgettable memories and what I never expected a couple of new friends. Love you all!
    • My two best friends decided to marry each other and Iā€™ll beĀ the best man of Tobi! Iā€™m very very happy about this, even if I was a little bit shocked in the first moment.
    • I decided to do a round-the-world trip ā€“ it will beĀ biggest project after my studiesā€¦
    • Found a job (hmm job found me). What nobodyĀ beliefed – my first job is in the management department and I have to wear a suit from time to time.
    • Caro found also a job – in the space business. I think I was more glad in this moment than in the momentĀ I got my acceptance.
    • A lot of parties in the last weeks, lot of funny moments, some stress at workā€¦ But overall life is good!

So as a conclusion I have to say that 2010 was at least one of the best years I ever had but Iā€™m looking forward for 2011! I heard that there will be a big marriage, a trip to London, maybe a trip into the Alps, lot of work on Airbus and Iā€™m very sure there will be much more.

    International Toilet Day

Today is my personal international toilet day. Not only because my day starts normally with a small pit stop on this location but also one of my main working task was related to this topic. Maybe not all of you know, the Department Iā€™m working for is TBCED2 ā€“ yes this is how Airbus people introduce themselves. For the rest of mankind it means: Research & Technology Department for the Cabin section. So Iā€™m related to all research for stuff which you as a passenger can see or even better touch.

So, as you can easily imagine, toilets on an airplane have also to be developed and this is not less important than e.g. the engines.

Failure onĀ the engines => people peeĀ themself andĀ emergency landing!
Failure on all Toilets => people peeĀ themself andĀ emergency landing!

    So same same but different!

In a few weeks, there will be a big meeting some project leaders present their research status ā€“ amongst others one of the toilet topics. The point Iā€™m interested in is the exact timing. On such whole day full of meetings the agenda shouldnā€™t be too boring. So the question was ā€“ is toilet an interesting topic or not? So my colleges ensure me toilet topics are the most interesting topics at all. As a conclusion of your discussion: Everybody feels like an expert on this, it isnā€™t long time ago that you used one and last but not least you can argue with: This is SHIT!

Needless to say, this is not enough for an international toilet day. On my way home I read in my book (First-Time Around the World) the toilet chapter *g*. Iā€™m sure some of you remember our special moments related to this subject. In the book the author divided into squatter, almost-western and Japanese toilets. In my opinion ā€œno toilet at allā€ is missing! For the people how have some problems to imagine this types I will try to explain the context in an engineering wayā€¦

    Squatter:
Something totally new for Europeans but I guess at least two billion people use this daily. The idea with these is that you squat over a hole a try to hit your target like a 52-bomber. Sometimes there are special marked areas on the left and right site you can step on. Biggest problem during the first experiences is keeping the balance. Falling back or frontwards is not recommendable. Of cause, you should also hit the target, especially the man should consider the blowback ā€“ aktio = reaktio! If you think this sounds challenging ā€“ imagine it is totally dark and you have another flashlight in the other hand šŸ˜‰ and after managing all this complexities you try to find the toilet paper. Now it is the right moment for one bad and one good news! Bad news ā€“ there is probably no paper Ā at all. Good news ā€“ the people are not that dirty and developed another method. Look at your left hand, if it is empty you are well prepared. May I shortly introduce ā€“ your new toilet paper. No Iā€™m not joking, there should be also a bowl of water which you can use to clean your hand afterwards but please donā€™t expect soup! So now you learned why no one in India touches people with the left hand. Welcome to real life šŸ˜‰

    Picture from funnyfartsoundsAlmost western:
Sometimes it happens that you enter a toilet and you see a toilet bowl. First impression: YES WESTERN STYLE but if you look closer you notice that the person which installed it was not that professional of even worse some people tried to figure out if their head or the bowl is stronger. Both possibilities head to even more complex squatter. Now you have to stay, hit the target and watch out that you donā€™t get injured by sharp edges. Beyond that, the problem with the toilet paper will remain. Often you get the possibility to use newspapers (not that bad) or even worse magazines. The glossy pages may look better but cost you hours to clean yourself. So the best tip ā€“ bring your own toilet paper!!!

    Japanese toilets:
If you think of the direct opposite of the just explained locations you have a Japanese one. This high-tech monster has often more wires than your computer and more buttons than you remote control. The high end version has internet connection, heated toilet seat, water cleaning system, air dryer, music box, massage functions, emergency button and automatic open/close function ā€“ of cause all managed by a remote control. My first experience with this high-tech machine was, how should I say, refreshing. I was well prepared, not shocked by the number of buttons but still searching the right one ā€“ the flush button. So I stated to push the biggest one ā€“ and heard a flush sound ā€“ first thought ā€“ YES I MADE IT ā€“ second thought ā€“ maybe not there is no water coming *arg*. Next one was the massage function ā€“ not so easy to find the stop buttons so before I found this one I activated the water cleaning system. I heard a hydraulic sound and felt seconds later a very very very stong water jet trying to enter my ass. I think was never sitting this concentrated and straight on a toilet. Afterwards I was lucky and found the air dryer but still no flush. After some more massage and some music songs I had to give up ā€“ went to my office and asked one of my colleges: HOW IS THIS FUCKING TOILET WORKING ā€“ maybe I asked more gentle but this is what I thought. Ā (The flush button is often a lever behind the toilet lid)

    No toilet at allā€¦:
Iā€™m sure all people being with me in this moment can remember the situation in Namibia. We are in the middle of the desert and the truck stopped. Through the speakers we get the message ā€“ toilet stop. I turned left ā€“ no toilet ā€“ I turned right ā€“ no toilet, hmm maybe behind a bush??? Hmm there is no bush ā€“ turned left again ā€“ hmm still nothing. Door opens and our drivers explained in short words: Girls on the left, boys on the right. I have to say, it was not easy in the beginning but after some stops I got used to it. Anyhow there are some more things to mention. Sometimes girls havenā€™t the same understanding of left and right. So it can happen that you are a little bit faster than the others and you have the great idea to catch you small camera and go to the backside of the car to make some nice and innocent landscape shots. What I had to see there was not exactly what I expected. Life is not easy ā€“ but brutal. Another good tip, especially for the girls ā€“ if you have to go to a toilet which is more or less a hole in the ground in the middle of nowhere and there are mosquitos around ā€“ they wonā€™t be as gentle as I was ā€“ they will bite you ā€“ some of you up to 50 times in one butt!

Iā€™m sure all of you have special experiences which are related to this topic too ā€“ so plz use the comment function to share it ;).

    Why?

Is it normal to miss people who were only a few weeks a part of your life? Since Iā€™m back from Africa a lot of my friends talk aboutĀ the “New Sven” – a changed person. Ā Yesterday, I read in my new book ā€“ maybe the first one after years which is not 100% non-fiction book ā€“ about travelling alone. Why travelling alone and what this means. In a lot the author wrote I can find myself and after thinking a little bit about the whole thing itā€™s no rocket science ;). What we single travelers really try to find is simply ourselves ā€“ thatā€™s nothing new but do you/we need loneness? The only thing I need is to be separated of my daily friends. As long as anybody remembers you to your normal life ā€“ it is much more complicated to do the next step. The big problem gain on you. after you did these steps, you have toĀ go back ā€œhomeā€. Everybody recognizeĀ a change but nobody is able to understand it. There is nobody smiling if I look to the sunset and askĀ yourself whereĀ this Ausi with the glovesĀ is now, nobody givesĀ you a hug because you are swearing: ā€œfucking ā€¦ā€, no tent-rules at all inĀ your room, no totally crashed people sitting/sleeping next to you in the morning ā€“ opening one eye and give you a smile, no one trying to jump earlier than you into a pool, no dilemmas in the evening, no AmericansĀ Ā you would cross the dessert for or even invest a 1min healing hug, no Ausi drinkingĀ you under the table with a simple smile, no 40min for a milk shake and angry people waiting for you in the truckĀ but excuses you everything after a honest sorry (I was so proud Daniel), no one giving you a dressing-down if you are depressed and tried to escape from the group, no bunnies and shorts ;), no lost glasses and you give a shit, no 4:1 and you are still in Africa (our moment Ali), no little girls who make you losing your heart to her with the most beautiful smile ever, no airplanes with totally finished tires, no soooo much more momentsā€¦ After so much intenseĀ situations I think it is totally normal to miss an environment which understands you 100%, which loves you because of all this and not in spite of your trip.

The big question for me is now ā€“ Would I do this again or give up parts ofĀ it but having people at home who can probably understand at least a part of your trip? The answer today for me: YES travelling alone, which ends up with a lot of new friends, is my way of traveling. Definitely, distance is a big problem for these friendships but my most intense friendship started also with some distance and will survive equal how many km or milesĀ will be between us.

@my Africa family: Hope this memories bring a smile also on your faces ā€“ would love to get a picture from these ā€“ and I promise I will try to MAKE this picture someday myself. First step will be a hug from my potential daughter for swearingā€¦
